The Invented Rule Behind Your Slump And What Breaks It

A slump shows up as a measurable stall: calls stop going out, follow-ups stop happening, and the pipeline sits empty for weeks. That stall almost always traces back to an invented rule a distributor built for themselves, one nobody else is following, quietly capping every number on the board.

    Key Takeaways

    • A prolonged slump often traces to Following Rules That Do Not Exist, an Unconscious Reflex™ where a distributor obeys self-imposed limits nobody actually assigned.
    • The Hidden Motive To Survive™ underneath is frequently Illogical Rules, the fear that if you don’t follow the rules, then you won’t survive.
    • Releasing that Motive, not the Unconscious Reflex, is what lets a distributor pick the phone back up without the invented ceiling.

I’ve spent 30+ years in the room with high achievers who look unstoppable from the outside, and network marketing distributors in a slump are some of the most misdiagnosed people I coach. Everyone around them assumes it’s a motivation problem or a market problem. Almost every time the cause sits somewhere else entirely.

A Real Slump Looks Like An Empty Calendar Where Outbound Used To Live

A real slump looks like a calendar with nothing on it where outbound activity used to live. The Unconscious Reflex at work here is Following Rules That Do Not Exist, defined exactly as it operates: “obeying rules, constraints and obligations nobody actually imposed on you.” A distributor can read every training, hear every pep talk, and still not move, because an invented rule is running quietly in the background, dictating exactly when and how often she believes she’s allowed to reach out.

Here’s what I hear from a composite of the network marketing distributors I’ve coached through a slump, built from dozens of coaching conversations. A distributor’s numbers dropped three months in a row, from a steady dozen calls a week to almost none. She has a warm list of people who said “maybe later” and never followed up. When I ask why she hasn’t called them back, the self-talk comes out fast: “You don’t call somebody twice in the same month. That’s just not how you do it. If I follow up again, I look desperate.”

That sentence is the tell. It matches a specific cell in the Motive x Unconscious Reflex Decoder, the signature cell for this Unconscious Reflex: Following Rules That Do Not Exist, driven by Illogical Rules. Illogical Rules is the fear that if you don’t follow the rules, then you won’t survive. Nobody taught her that rule. No training manual contains it. She built it herself, and now she’s obeying it as if it were law, the exact thing keeping her warm list frozen.

I considered a second Motive before landing on Illogical Rules: Humble, the fear that if you show your power, then you won’t survive. Humble driving this same Unconscious Reflex sounds like “I can’t ask for that, that’s above my level,” a rule about rank and permission. But that’s not what her self-talk was about. She never said anything about her own standing or whether she was allowed to reach that high. She was citing a procedural rule about timing and etiquette, one she treats as settled fact. The self-talk pointed at Illogical Rules, not Humble, so Illogical Rules is the Motive that got named.

Releasing The Motive Changes What Arguing With The Unconscious Reflex Never Will

The Unconscious Reflex is the tell. The Motive underneath it is the target. Convincing a distributor the rule is wrong rarely works, because the Unconscious Reflex obeys rather than reasons. The Motive triggers the Unconscious Reflex, on repeat, so releasing the Motive is what starts to release the Unconscious Reflex too. Recontextualization™ means disproving the false conditional Illogical Rules is running: the belief that breaking an invented rule threatens your survival. It doesn’t. Calling a warm prospect twice in the same month has never once ended a career.

When that Motive quiets down, the distributor crosses into Rational, the Domain of Thriving paired with Illogical Rules: knowing that logic is safe. The mind goes quiet, and for the first time in months, the follow-up call is just a follow-up call, and nothing about it registers as a risk anymore.

What This Looks Like On A Tuesday

A distributor I coached through this exact pattern kept a mental list of rules she’d never agreed to: don’t call twice in a month, don’t text after a certain hour, don’t follow up more than three times. Once we named the Motive, the Drunk Monkey™ lost its authority over her calendar. She picked up the phone, called the person who’d gone quiet in month one, and reopened a conversation that turned into her best month in almost a year. Nothing about her offer changed. The invented rule was the only thing standing between her and the call.

That’s the shift. A quiet mind that stops enforcing rules nobody wrote, which no closing technique can produce.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Why do I keep avoiding follow-up calls even when I know they matter?
A: The avoidance usually comes from the Unconscious Reflex called Following Rules That Do Not Exist, an invented rule about timing, tone, or etiquette that you’ve never actually questioned. The pattern lifts once the underlying Hidden Motive To Survive, often Illogical Rules, gets released.

Q: Is a sales slump in network marketing usually a numbers problem?
A: Rarely. Most slumps I see trace to an invented internal rule quietly limiting activity, while prospect supply and offer quality are usually fine. Naming the rule and the fear underneath it typically restores activity faster than any new script.

Q: What is the Rapid Enlightenment Process?
A: REP™ has been independently researched and published in a peer-reviewed journal (JARSS, 2023). The Rapid Enlightenment Process (REP) dissolves the Hidden Motives To Survive that drive reactive behavior by eliminating the root program at its source. Learn more at matthewferry.com.

The rule keeping you out of the game was never real, and the slump ends the day you stop obeying it. If this resonates, step into coaching and find the invented rule running your calendar. Let’s get to work.
