The Invented Rule That Stops Your Launches From Working

Entrepreneurs who feel like they are doing everything right and getting nothing need one thing from a coach: someone who can spot the invented rule they are following so rigidly that it blocks the results the rules were supposed to produce. When you are doing everything right and nothing is working, look past the strategy. An old rule you wrote for yourself after getting burned once has been running the launch, and you have obeyed it so completely that you can’t see it anymore.

    Key Takeaways

    • Following a proven framework to the letter and still getting no results usually means a self-imposed rule, not the framework itself, is the real obstacle.
    • The tell is an Unconscious Reflex™ called Following Rules That Do Not Exist, treating an invented law as absolute even when the market in front of you is saying otherwise.
    • Naming the Hidden Motive To Survive™ underneath the rule, and releasing it, is what lets an entrepreneur adapt instead of repeat.

Over three decades I have coached agents, closers, and team leaders through exactly this pattern. This entrepreneur has more discipline than most people ever develop, and that discipline is aimed at the wrong target.

Why “Doing Everything Right” Is Not The Same As Doing What Works

Doing everything right according to a framework and getting a result are two different things, and entrepreneurs conflate them constantly. A framework is a starting map. Treating it as a law that can never bend, regardless of what your specific audience or market is telling you, is where the breakdown starts.

Take a composite I’ve coached dozens of times: a solopreneur bought a proven launch framework. Content calendar, email sequence, pricing script, cart open on day fourteen, exactly as taught. She followed every step, zero deviation, three launches in a row. Zero sales on the third. She sits with the analytics open at midnight, refreshing a dashboard that isn’t going to change.

The Unconscious Reflex Behind The Rigid Playbook

The Unconscious Reflex here is Following Rules That Do Not Exist, obeying rules, constraints and obligations nobody actually imposed on you. It is a negative thought pattern you didn’t ask for, and it is the tell, not the target. You do not repair an Unconscious Reflex. You read it.

Listen to what she is actually telling herself at the dashboard, not what she posted publicly about “trusting the process.” It sounds like this: “I follow the exact framework every time. I don’t skip steps, I don’t improvise. I got burned once by winging it, so now I do it exactly by the book, no exceptions.” That is an old wound with a policy attached, wearing discipline as a uniform, and it points at a specific Hidden Motive To Survive.

The Hidden Motive Underneath, And The One That Almost Fit

The Motive underneath that self-talk is Grudge, the fear that if you stop remembering the danger, then you won’t survive. Match the language to the decoder cell: Following Rules That Do Not Exist paired with Grudge is a common expression of this Motive, because the rule came from an old wound and now functions as a scar with a policy attached. “I don’t do anything on a handshake, ever, there’s a reason” is the same shape as her rule. Both are a memory wearing a rulebook.

I considered Pride first, because Pride also produces this exact Unconscious Reflex. Pride is the fear that if you don’t matter, then you won’t survive, and its version sounds like “someone at my level shouldn’t be asking for this,” a status rule protecting a rank nobody assigned. But her self-talk never mentions rank. It cites one specific, sourced memory, a launch that failed when she improvised, with a lesson attached to that event. Pride’s rule protects an image. Hers protects against a repeat of a dated wound. The language matched Grudge’s cell, not Pride’s.

Here is the interplay on repeat. Every time a launch underperforms, Grudge fires harder, and Following Rules That Do Not Exist tightens the grip on the framework instead of loosening it. The tighter she holds the rulebook, the less she notices what her actual audience is telling her in the moment, and the worse the next launch performs, which reinforces the Motive again. The Unconscious Reflex is the symptom. Grudge is the condition running it.

Recontextualization™ does not ask her to abandon the framework or trust more blindly. It disproves the false conditional the Motive is running on: that if she stops remembering the old danger, she will not survive a repeat of it. That danger already happened, and the memory of it does nothing to keep her safe today. Letting that specific launch go was always safe.

Release the Motive and the mind goes quiet. When the mind is quiet, the Domain of Thriving underneath Grudge becomes accessible: Forgiving, knowing you are safe to let it go. Not looser standards. Not less rigor. Just room to notice what this launch, this audience, this week is actually asking for, instead of running the last one’s lesson on a loop.

What you accept will transform. What you resist will persist. She kept resisting the update, so the update kept failing to land, launch after launch, until the pattern itself got named.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Why does following a proven framework exactly sometimes produce zero results?
A: A framework is a starting map, not a law. When an entrepreneur treats it as unbendable because of a past failure, a Hidden Motive To Survive, often Grudge, is running the rigidity. The Unconscious Reflex, Following Rules That Do Not Exist, keeps the entrepreneur obeying a rule that was never actually required, and the market signal gets ignored in favor of the old lesson.

Q: Is this really a mindset problem, or just a bad strategy?
A: Check whether the entrepreneur adjusts to real feedback or defends an old rule. Identical treatment across three different launches is a survival pattern, not a strategy decision.

Q: What is the Rapid Enlightenment Process?
A: REP™ has been independently researched and published in a peer-reviewed journal (JARSS, 2023). The Rapid Enlightenment Process™ (REP) dissolves the Hidden Motives To Survive that drive reactive behavior by eliminating the root program at its source. Learn more at matthewferry.com.
