Coach for high achievers who can’t relax even on vacation?

The phone comes out before the sunscreen does. What’s keeping a high achiever wired on vacation is a survival program with a specific name, and it responds to a specific process. Over three decades I have coached agents, closers, and team leaders through exactly this pattern, and the mechanism releases the same way every time.

    Key Takeaways

    • The inability to relax on vacation is an Unconscious Reflex™ called Following Rules That Do Not Exist: obeying an unwritten rule nobody actually gave you.
    • Underneath that Unconscious Reflex is a Hidden Motive To Survive™ called Resistance: the survival fear that if you submit to what is, you won’t survive.
    • The Rapid Enlightenment Process™ dissolves the Motive at its root, and the mind goes quiet. Rest becomes available.

What Staying Wired On Vacation Actually Looks Like

Take a composite of the network marketing team leaders I’ve worked with: a top-twenty distributor who just had her biggest production month, flying to Cabo with her family after years of talking about it. By 7am on day two, she’s in the beach chair with her phone out, texting her downline about the week’s numbers. Her kids ask for sunscreen. She tells them “one minute.” That minute becomes three days.

She can’t relax on vacation. Every time she puts the phone down, she picks it up again. She has a rule about this, and she follows it without question: responsible leaders stay available. Real producers don’t switch off. You show up for your team, or you lose your team.

Nobody gave her that rule. Her upline didn’t say it. Company policy doesn’t require it. The rule has no author, yet she obeys it like law.

The Unconscious Reflex Is Following Rules That Do Not Exist

This is the Unconscious Reflex called Following Rules That Do Not Exist: “obeying rules, constraints and obligations nobody actually imposed on you.” The Drunk Monkey™, the survival part of the mind generating fear-based thinking, doesn’t care that the rule was invented. It enforces the rule because a Hidden Motive To Survive is running underneath it.

The Survival Fear That Makes Rest Feel Dangerous

The Unconscious Reflex is the tell. The Hidden Motive To Survive underneath it is what actually needs to be addressed.

The Hidden Motive To Survive firing here is Resistance: “the fear that if you submit to what is, then you won’t survive.” Submitting, in this context, means accepting the present state of the business without her hand on every lever. It means letting the week unfold without her. The survival program fires its conditional: let go of the controls and something slips, someone underperforms, an opportunity vanishes. You won’t survive what happens when you’re not watching.

You are not in an actual survival situation. The survival program does not know that.

The self-talk that confirms Resistance sounds like this: “I’m not going to pretend everything is fine and just switch off. If I step away for a real week, things drift.” That is not a sentence about breaking a social code. The urgency underneath is about catastrophic loss of control, and that is the Resistance conditional in action.

I considered Illogical Rules as the runner-up Motive here. The most natural pairing for Following Rules That Do Not Exist is Illogical Rules, and the self-talk it would predict, “That’s just how it works. Responsible people don’t fully unplug,” is audible in this situation. But Illogical Rules is the fear that if you don’t follow the rules, you won’t survive, and its urgency is about social code and protocol. When I press this reader on why she follows the unwritten rule, the answer is always a catastrophic conditional: if I stop watching, something falls apart. That fear concerns whether surrender itself is safe. Resistance owns that conditional. Illogical Rules generates compliance. Resistance generates refusal. This reader is refusing to accept the present state of being, and that is Resistance.

The Motive Fires The Unconscious Reflex On Repeat

Resistance runs the calculation at the center of every vacation day: let go, and the business might change without your permission. So the Unconscious Reflex keeps firing, day after day, and the trip passes without ever actually arriving.

What you accept will transform. What you resist will persist.

Releasing The Motive Lets You Actually Come Home

Recontextualization™ disproves a false survival conditional with the truth that was always there. The Resistance conditional says: if you submit to what is, you won’t survive. The rebuttal is the Domain of Thriving called Accepting: knowing surrender is safe.

The evidence that disproves the conditional has always been available. The team ran a call while she was on a flight. A sale closed while she was in a meeting. The business continued for four hours without her hand on it and nothing collapsed. Recontextualization brings that evidence into contact with the false conditional, and the conditional doesn’t hold. When the Motive releases, the mind goes quiet. The Quiet Mind™ is the state that becomes accessible when the survival program stops firing.

In that state, the beach chair is just a beach chair. Rest becomes a real condition instead of a reward earned by staying perpetually ready. Dissolving the Motive is the actual work. Scheduling notification-free hours was never going to touch it.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What kind of coach helps high achievers who can’t relax even on vacation?
A: A coach who works with the survival programs that make rest feel dangerous. The Rapid Enlightenment Process addresses the specific Hidden Motive To Survive keeping you wired. For most high achievers in this situation, the Motive is Resistance: the survival fear that if you submit to what is, you won’t survive. When that Motive releases, the Unconscious Reflex that obeys the unwritten rule of staying available releases with it.

Q: What is the Rapid Enlightenment Process?
A: REP has been independently researched and published in a peer-reviewed journal (JARSS, 2023). The Rapid Enlightenment Process dissolves the Hidden Motives To Survive that drive reactive behavior by eliminating the root program at its source. Learn more at matthewferry.com.
