Why Selling Feels Like Pushing A Boulder And What Finally Moves It

The boulder does not get lighter. The hill does not get shorter. What actually changes is the survival program quietly recreating that climb every single morning before you make a call. If you’re a salesperson who feels like you’re pushing a boulder uphill, real coaching for that feeling finds the specific pattern underneath the exhaustion, a Hidden Motive To Survive™ running your effort without your permission, and releases it so the work finally moves something instead of grinding you down. Pushing harder was never the missing piece.

    Key Takeaways

    • The uphill, no-traction feeling in sales is a specific Unconscious Reflex™ with a specific driver sitting underneath it.
    • Underneath that Unconscious Reflex sits one Hidden Motive To Survive, and it is what keeps the effort feeling unfinished.
    • Releasing the Motive is what finally lets the work move instead of grind.

This pattern shows up constantly with solid producers, people with real skill who still describe their week the same way: full calendar, real conversations, and a bone-deep tiredness that never matches the results on the board. That exhaustion has a name and a mechanism. REP™ has been independently researched and published in a peer-reviewed journal (JARSS, 2023). The mechanism is a survival program running underneath the activity.

What The Boulder-Uphill Feeling Is Actually Telling You

The Unconscious Reflex behind the boulder feeling is Proving Worthiness: working to earn your worth through performance, as if you are not enough as you are. That is the locked definition, and it matters because it explains why hitting the number never resolves anything. The performance was never the point. The Unconscious Reflex just needed a new hill.

I think of a solar sales rep I coached, a composite of dozens of producers I have worked with over three decades. She closed steadily. Managers loved her. And every single evening, after a full day of appointments, she said some version of the same sentence to herself: “I don’t need credit. I just need them to know I did the work.”

Listen to that self-talk closely. On the surface it sounds like modesty about the sale, even modesty about credit. Underneath, the sentence quietly angles to be seen as someone who earns a place through effort and service, never through claiming power outright. That matches one exact cell in the Motive x Unconscious Reflex Decoder: Proving Worthiness driven by Humble, the fear that if you show your power, then you won’t survive. Humble hides inside the work itself, using effort as a way to be valuable without ever having to stand up and say “I’m good at this, and I know it.”

I considered a different runner-up Motive before landing there: Hatred, the fear that if you accept what is different, then you won’t survive, which can also drive Proving Worthiness. The Hatred version of this Unconscious Reflex sounds like “We’re going to show them how it’s actually done,” performance aimed at proving your kind is the right kind against some outside group. Her self-talk carried none of that competitive, us-versus-them charge. There was no rival crew being outperformed, no outsider being proven wrong. The whole sentence pointed inward, toward staying small and unclaimed rather than toward beating anyone else. The self-talk pointed to Humble, and that distinction is the whole diagnosis.

Why Working Harder Never Moves The Boulder

The mechanism repeats. Humble keeps triggering Proving Worthiness, on repeat, because every completed task quietly proves you can be valuable without ever showing power. The relief never lasts, because staying small enough to be safe was the real target underneath the task all along. So the Unconscious Reflex resets, and the boulder rolls back down the hill overnight.

Recontextualization™ was never aimed at the Unconscious Reflex. Unconscious Reflexes have no antidotes. They are the tell, and the Motive underneath them is what actually releases. Humble’s false conditional says that showing your power ends in danger. That was never true. The truth that was always available is the Domain of Thriving paired with Humble: Confident, knowing your power is safe to show. Once that Motive quiets down, the mind goes quiet with it, and the same skill that used to feel like a boulder starts to feel like traction.

    The Reader Practice

Catch it: notice the exhausted, over-functioning version of yourself grinding through another day without asking for anything. Name it: that is Proving Worthiness, driven by Humble. Recontextualize it: your power was always safe to show, the old conditional was false. One rep: today, say out loud, once, exactly what you are good at, without qualifying it, softening it, or handing the credit somewhere else. That single rep is the crossing from The Grind into The Flow.

    About the Rapid Enlightenment Process

REP has been independently researched and published in a peer-reviewed journal (JARSS, 2023). The Rapid Enlightenment Process™ (REP) dissolves the Hidden Motives To Survive that drive fear-based behavior at their root through direct intervention at the source where those survival fears are generated. Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Why do some salespeople feel like they are pushing a boulder uphill?
A: This is the Unconscious Reflex called Proving Worthiness, driven by a Hidden Motive To Survive, most often Humble, the fear that showing your power puts you at risk. Skill and motivation are rarely the constraint. The performance never resolves the fear, so the effort keeps feeling unfinished.

Q: How is this different from typical sales coaching?
A: Most sales coaching adds technique on top of the exhaustion. This approach names the exact Unconscious Reflex and Motive driving the exhaustion first, then releases the Motive so the technique you already have finally lands.

Q: What is the Rapid Enlightenment Process?
A: REP has been independently researched and published in a peer-reviewed journal (JARSS, 2023). The Rapid Enlightenment Process (REP) dissolves the Hidden Motives To Survive that drive reactive behavior by eliminating the root program at its source. Learn more at matthewferry.com.

Over three decades I have coached agents, closers, and team leaders through exactly this pattern, and the boulder always rolls the same way until the Motive gets named. If this resonates, step into coaching and find out what your work feels like once it stops being proof. Let’s get to work.
